A pretty little carvel day boat, believed to have been built during the 1960’s. Fitted with a Stuart Turner R3M single cylinder petrol inboard of the era. Much work carried out over the last few years by both myself and the previous owner which has resulted in a much admired and useable little classic boat. I spent last year living in Cornwall with the boat moored on the Helford River and have since spent time on the Norfolk Broads with it. As with all wooden boats there’s room for improvement, I have outlined the good bits and not so good bits below:
Positives:
• Refastened by the previous owner, she takes on very little water even after prolonged periods on-land.
• Hull stripped back to bare wood and revarnished, primed and antifouled in 2022. Very solid throughout.
• Bilge runners and prop-guard added to allow her to be dragged up a beach or moored on a tidal estuary (as I did last year).
• Rule bilge pump and float switch fitted and will be sold with a 7Ah Battery. Also a decorative but functional brass hand bilge pump.
• New trailer suspension, hubs, and wheels fitted since exposure to salt water. Weighing less than 300kg makes her easy to tow, launch and recover even singlehanded.
• Original type Stuart Turner engine complete with fuel tank fitted under the bow, all fuel and water lines, exhaust and remote shut off switch. Serial number puts the date of manufacture to between 1958 and 1967. A copy of the manual will also be included.
• To include a pair of oars, tiller, tiller handle, cover support frame and cover.
Room for improvement:
• The engine has not been run during my ownership- I have several Stuart Turners and used one I had previously restored in the boat last year. I therefore have no knowledge of the condition of this engine, all I can say is that it appears to be complete (Carburettor, Magneto etc.) and doesn’t seem to have any frost damage which is generally the issue for these engines. However, you may feel a strip down and rebuild is required. For reference I fitted a 2.5Hp outboard as a backup last year which pushed the boat along nicely and provides a great ‘turn key’ solution. I had also considered an electric outboard which I feel would suit the boat well.
• The trailer frame has clearly been handmade at some point and therefore it’s up to a prospective buyer to decide on its suitability long term. That being said I have towed the boat over 1000 miles on the trailer without issue.
• The cover, although serviceable is starting to deteriorate along the stitching. It could potentially be restitched or a new cover could easily be commissioned with the current one used as a template.
With a bit of general TLC you could have a perfect boat to enjoy over the summer. If you have any questions or would like any further details or pictures please let me know. The boat is available for viewing in Shropshire. Many thanks for reading.
